Night had fallen. Jynera meandered along the riverbank, contemplating the crystalline waters. She had since taken off her silvery sandals, and savored the springy feeling of the cool grass on her bare feet. She came upon a set of large stepping stones leading across the water. Jynera stepped lightly onto the first one, then leapt along the next two until she came to the stone residing in the center of the river. It was just wide enough for her to sit down, cross-legged, and gaze into the depths of the rushing waters.
The Elfin ruler had a problem; humans were beginning to "explore" the forest. This exploration was causing too much destruction to go unnoticed. She had her most powerful Mages using their powers to attempt to drive the humans out, and it was working--for the moment. She had even contributed her own spells to the cause. But Jynera knew that this would only stave off the humans for a little while. They were a very determined race--determined to control everything, that is. It was only a matter of time before they discovered the hidden and highly civilized society of Elves.
Jynera sighed. She dropped one of her hands into the cool water and allowed the current to carry it backwards a bit. She smiled gently, forgetting her troubles for but a moment in the calmness that the night brought about in the forest. She was sorry to return to the Citadel, as all it meant was more deliberating with her advisers on how best to handle the situation. This was the first moment of peace Jynera had acquired since the humans began invading the forest. She moved her gaze upward to admire the moon through a gap in the trees, full, round, and gleaming white. A small smile played across her lips. She rose to her feet and hopped gracefully back across the stones to the riverbank, then disappeared into the shadowy trees.
